Chief Minister of A.P. Sri N. Chandrababu Naidu assures support to Federation of Churches

Picture

Secunderabad, September 14, 2015: The Andhra Pradesh Federation of Churches (APFC), which is a state-level unit of the Federation of Telugu Churches (FTC), consisting of Archbishops /Bishops of Mainline Churches and Heads of Major Christian Denominations in our State, submitted a Memorandum to Sri N. Chandrababu Naidu, Hon. Chief Minister of A.P. in his Camp Office at Vijayawada on September 12, 2015.

The President of FTC / APFC, CSI Moderator Bishop G. Dyvasirvadam of Krishna-Godavari, and its General Secretary Catholic Bishop Gali Bali of Guntur, met the Chief Minister and explained to him the stand of APFC opposing the move of the Government to set up a Board for Church Properties.

While thanking him for his services to the Christian Minorities and his concern for the protection of Church properties, the APFC delegation brought to his notice that unlike the properties of Wakfs and Hindu Endowments, the properties of the Churches are private in nature as they are bought and owned by the Churches, and registered on their names. The Churches, Dioceses and their Institutions are registered Trusts or Societies that are registered under the A.P. Registration of Societies Act, and so they are already bound by Society / Trust laws and regulations.

In the wake of the Government of Andhra Pradesh constituting a Group of Ministers on the protection of Christian Minorities Properties vide G.O. RT. No. 1929 GAD dated 26.06.2015, the Memorandum made it clear that APFC is opposed to the interference of the Government in the administrative affairs of the Churches, Dioceses and their Institutions including their properties, which is guaranteed by the Indian Constitution under the Articles 25 to 30. For further clarity on the matter, the following two statements were enclosed: “Note on enacting a legislation for the regulation of church properties” and “The Official Stand and Views of the APFC on Enacting a Law for the Regulation of Church Properties”.

In his response, the Chief Minister assured the AFTC delegation that he was aware of the nature of Churches properties and his Government would not set up a Board for Church properties. Rather, he assured to assist the Churches from the alienation and occupation of their lands by holding consultations with the Bishops and Members of APFC and if necessary, by constituting a committee with them to address the grievances.
