Shanti Bhavan Shines Bright with the Festival of Lights

Picture

The semester is drawing to a close and our children are studying hard for their final exams. But it isn’t all work at Shanti Bhavan; several festivals are on their way during the remainder of the year, starting with Diwali. Diwali is the festival of lights, a celebration of knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair. It’s one of our favorite holidays, filled with laughter and good cheer.

This year the 11th graders organized the events for the day and it was packed with delicious meals and sweets, movies, firecrackers and a full evening of dances and performances. Two of our children, Ruby Joy and Richard, recited the origins of Diwali. They told the tale of the return of Lord Rama to the eager audience.

Shanti Bhavan 8th Grade Student Honored at Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards

Our children continue to defy expectations and break down barriers. On November 10th, Visali of the 8th grade was one of ten girls from around the world honored at Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Despite intense poverty, caste injustice - her father is a dalit and works long hours for little money - and her family’s indifference to her education, Visali continues to shine. She represents the best qualities of our children at Shanti Bhavan.

Glamour believes in her as much as we do, and asked her to speak on behalf of all ten girls (and millions of others around the world) to accept the award. Just 13 years old, she took the stage and addressed nearly 3,000 guests including Hillary Clinton, Jodie Foster, Ambassador Samantha Powers, Stephen Colbert and many others.

Visali is a great example of what long-term, quality education can do for children born into poverty, and she’s only getting started. She dreams of becoming a doctor someday and helping many others in need. We know she can do it!
Please enjoy her moment at Carnegie Hall.
